By John JB Russell

TL;DR

Audit visibility, query coverage, source quality, entity consistency, crawlability, topical gaps, competitor citations and commercial relevance before creating more content.

Before creating another content cluster, run an AI search visibility audit.

Many brands already have useful expertise online but it is poorly structured, weakly connected or absent from the questions buyers actually ask.

1. Which questions matter commercially?

Create a shortlist of prompts and searches tied to real buying behaviour.

Do not measure only broad informational terms. Include comparison, pricing, risk and provider-selection questions.

2. Does your brand appear?

Test the questions consistently and record whether your brand is:

  • cited;
  • mentioned without a link;
  • absent;
  • described inaccurately;
  • displaced by competitors.

3. Which competitors appear instead?

Look for patterns. Are the same domains repeatedly cited? Are they winning because of better evidence, clearer answers, stronger authority or simply broader coverage?

4. Do you have a page that answers the question?

If not, that is a genuine content gap.

If yes, the problem may be discoverability, structure, evidence or authority rather than content volume.

5. Is the answer easy to extract?

Check headings, opening paragraphs, tables, lists and FAQ sections.

The key answer should be understandable without needing three paragraphs of context.

6. Is the page supported by proof?

Look for named sources, original examples, case studies, expert attribution and factual support.

Generic claims are easy to reproduce and hard to trust.

7. Can crawlers and retrieval systems reach it?

Check canonical tags, indexing, internal links, rendering and sitemap inclusion.

A strong answer hidden in a poorly discoverable page has limited value.

8. Does the page lead somewhere commercially useful?

AI visibility is not the end goal. The page should help the right visitor understand the next step.

Key takeaways

  • Audit first; do not assume the answer is always more content.
  • Measure visibility against commercial questions.
  • Diagnose absence by separating coverage, evidence, structure and discoverability.
  • Connect AI visibility work to a business outcome.
